Phoebe's PLJ" began as a project for my Freshman English class when we were reading Daniel Pink's "A Whole New Mind". The purpose of the PLJ or Personal Learning Journal was to blog our thoughts on a selection of Pinks exercises throughout his book. I just recently came across this, today in fact. I was looking up creativity blogs on the internet, looking for some inspiration to do, well, anything. As I was reading through them I realized that creativity blogs are no more than random thoughts and tidbits of a persons creative, spiritual, and emotional journey through time. I have decided to make this PLJ not only a personal learning journal, but also my very own Personal Learning JOURNEY, my version of a creativity blog. With that I shall let the journey begin. No, not begin, resume with the journal as my witness.

Learning is Changing: World Languages

In high schools, and even middle schools, there are 2 languages offered to students, French and Spanish. Is that because those are the most useful languages in today’s society? If so why have the most important languages not changed in the last 30 years? I have no doubt that Spanish is the most important language in the united states at this time because of the amount of immigrants we receive from Mexico. Some people feel that instead of America learning Spanish to assist the immigrants, they should instead learn English to function in today’s society. What they don’t realize is that we have way more resources than immigrants, and have more opportunities to use these languages. There are also many jobs in which Spanish can be very helpful. One of my main career choices is police work, or more specifically ATF. Jobs like these often bring you to the less reputable part of town, where it is important to be able to communicate with people of all races. Considering the fact that Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States, it can be very useful in many situations.
